Learning a new skill opens up new opportunities, including future employment.
We know this very well, but we don’t learn new skills actively due to the following reasons:
1. What exactly do we want?
2. Can we do what we have always wanted to do?
3. How can I equip myself with skills that I could use at immediate calling, without waiting for help to arrive?
This is a grounds up education initiative aimed at building capabilities of practitioners in Malaysian performing arts, ranging from overcoming self-doubt to practical skills in writing media releases and artist statements, to name a few. Talks and workshops will be organised along the categories Inform, Discuss, Educate.
Theatrex Asia is a regional online magazine focusing on writings about theatre in Southeast Asia and the Chinese-speaking societies in Asia, namely Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong. It also encourages academic exchanges through its online academic journal the Journal of Theatrex Aisa (JOTA).
Having spent 6 years working in the Malaysian performing arts, editor Richard Chua has initiated this grounds-up initiative to gather local practitioners to contribute towards building capacities for fellow practitioners. It is a space where skills and ideas could be transferred from one practitioner to another.
As lovers of the arts, we could do our parts. Theatrex Asia will contribute its professional experience in education and writing to make transfer of skills better with good outcomes; as a participant and audience of good performances, you could make the performing arts ecology better by enriching the practitioners intellectually through the wisdom developed by leading speakers in the arts.
For more information about project Building Capacities and the talks and workshops offered, please kindly visit our online magazine: http://www.theatrex.asia.
Almost all arts writing platforms are in need of skilled writers and translators. The community suffers from a lack of writings that dicument, inform and educate. The only way to nurture skilled writers and translators is to train them. We need help from the community and beyond to make this happen.
